My First NewSteem Thoughts

@ph1102 · 2019-09-12 23:36 · newsteem

I was avoiding #NewSteem tag all this time, but it is a time to take a look into it...

Firstly, I would like to make one thing clear... I'm relatively new Steemian, so I don't really know how it was earlier on #oldsteem (before 2019), but I know some of the "dark histories of Steem". That was the main reason why I didn't comment about the #newsteem until now, but I have noticed some differences between a few months ago and now. So, let's begin...

Curation fears? 50-50% split

One of the major fears was a negative impact from changing rewards from 75-25% to 50-50%. But, maybe because of the fact that Steem-Engine tribes have started a few weeks BEFORE HF21, and the fact that majority of the tribes were implemented 50-50% rewards, the change didn't was so painful. To be honest, as a small author, I have experienced lower rewards for my posts, but they were also low before, so it doesn't bother me too much... On the other side, I have received...

...my first whale upvote

And that was exactly the plan BEFORE implementing these changes on the chain. To move those whale asses (just to be clear, not everyone was lazy) to curate more posts on the network and earn their money by doing something. I know that it is just one upvote, but I have noticed more and more new names that are upvoting my posts... That can mean two things... Or my posts are better than earlier, or more people are curating... I hope that the reason is both things.. :)

Tribes, dust, and commenting

One of the primary problems for small users is reaching the "dust" level, which is at the moment a little bit more than $0.02. What does that mean? That means if your post (or comment) has less than that value, you will not receive anything.

Let's suppose that I'm lucky to get some decent upvotes on my posts, but what is the solution for #newbees here on Steem? How can they find their way on Steem? I already wrote about this problem in previous posts, but it has to be said more times. The solution is Steem tribes. Maybe you will not receive enough STEEM to reach dust level, but if you write a quality post in the certain niche of the tribe, you will probably earn much more in tokens! After that, you can exchange tokens for Steem, or whatever you want to do with them.

Another problem connected with dust is upvoting comments. I have always upvoted comments at my posts and reply to them, but today there is no sense to do it anymore. My STEEM upvote is too small and it will go to dust, but I'm upvoting comments with my staked tokens and they don't go anywhere except in the pocket of commenters. :) So, that problem is also solved!

And we are coming to the elephant in the room...

...downvotes

Before HF21 I was really against the downvotes, but really, really... My look to downvotes was like to something negative, filthy... At that moment I didn't notice a large amount of SPAM (I was in a circle of great people with organized feed with great stuff) that is overwhelming the network... And it was huuuuuge... Today, thanks to downvotes, if you check the trending page of any tag, you will find more-less quality posts on the top of them... And that is the point, isn't it?

On the other side, as I'm curating a lot in our small #CTP tribe, I have started to use my downvotes also to make our tribe more focused... and to make valuable content more visible to everyone...

So, in conclusion... It looks that it was too hard for me to see all the benefits of the changes before they were taking place, and even now it's hard to see... But, every change needs time to adapt and to show the results... It will take more time to get things balanced, but it will come and I'm sure about it.

The thing that I like the most from #NewSteem is that with 50% rewards that go to the curators, everyone is motivated more to upvote... And there are no more excuses for not doing that...

and one more thing...

By upvoting, you are showing appreciation to the author for his hard work... You are saying THANKS... and there is no such thing as too many thanks!
