After some searching, we found a vineyard not too far from where we were staying—close enough for a relaxed day trip, and highly rated for its authentic, welcoming experience. We booked a tour and headed over, arriving around noon… which, in hindsight, may not have been the best timing. The midday sun was intense, especially as we started the tour out in the fields, walking among rows of sun-drenched grapevines. But even through the heat, it was fascinating. We learned about the centuries of tradition behind winemaking in the region, and how every detail—from the type of grape to the slope of the hill to the timing of the harvest—plays a role in the final product. What surprised me most was how resilient the vines are. It had barely rained the entire time we’d been in Italy, and yet the grapes were thriving. The guide explained how Tuscany’s dry, rocky terrain is actually ideal for certain wines, helping the vines dig deep for water and nutrients, and concentrating flavor in the fruit. From there, we made our way to the wine fermentation area, where we were blown away by the scale of it all. Huge stainless steel containers, barrels lining the walls—it was a side of wine production I hadn’t really thought about, and it gave us a new appreciation for just how much goes into each bottle. Finally, it was time for what everyone really came for: the tasting. Thankfully, we were now comfortably seated under the shade, enjoying a spread of local cheeses, cured meats, olives, and bread alongside our wine. We tasted several varieties, and while we still aren’t turning into sommeliers anytime soon, we did find a couple we genuinely liked—enough to buy a few bottles to take home. Of course, with our luggage nearly bursting at the seams after weeks of travel, the real challenge was figuring out how to pack the wine safely. (Spoiler: it involved a lot of careful wrapping and strategic suitcase shuffling.) This vineyard visit wasn’t just about the wine—it was about ending our trip with a peaceful, cultural experience, surrounded by nature and history. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and soak in all the richness that Tuscany had offered us over the summer. Another great experience, another memory made, and a perfect toast to cap off a summer we’ll never forget. Salute!
